HENDERSON, N.C. — Five former detention officers in Vance County are facing criminal charges after allegedly arranging and allowing two female inmates to fight inside the county jail.

According to court documents, the incident occurred August 12, 2026, at the Vance County Detention Center.

A grand jury indicted the five officers on October 26. Each faces a Class 1 misdemeanor charge of willfully failing to discharge official duties.

The officers charged are:

  • Jessica Alston
  • Kristy Trotman
  • Bonthier Francis
  • Jabarri Davis
  • Malajah Daniels

Investigators allege the officers failed to protect the inmates and instead facilitated the confrontation.

Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame told WRAL the inmates were encouraged to fight and that the incident was captured on surveillance video.

All five officers have been fired, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.

Questions About Jail Oversight

The allegations come as the detention center faces scrutiny over unsafe conditions and staffing shortages.

State inspectors have repeatedly raised concerns about safety inside the facility.

The larger question: How could officers responsible for protecting inmates allegedly encourage them to fight?

The charges remain allegations, and all five defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
