FOREST CITY, N.C. — What was supposed to be a routine lunch at a North Carolina Chili’s turned into a medical emergency when three customers suffered chemical burns after drinking margaritas.
According to the Foothills Health District, the incident happened October 28, 2026, at the Chili’s Grill & Bar in Forest City.
Investigators say the dangerous mix-up began two days earlier when a contractor was power-washing the restaurant’s exterior.
A restaurant employee received a granulated degreasing chemical from the contractor, transferred it into an unlabeled container, and brought it inside, leaving it near the bar.
On October 28, another employee preparing the bar for lunch service reportedly mistook the chemical for a margarita ingredient and used it to prepare the drink station.
Shortly after opening, three customers ordered margaritas.
Within moments of drinking them, the customers experienced burning sensations and chemical burns in and around their mouths. They notified employees and left to seek medical treatment.
Two restaurant employees subsequently tasted the substance and reported similar symptoms.
Health officials immediately suspended the restaurant’s food service permit and required staff to clean and sanitize affected equipment, surfaces, and preparation areas.
The following day, October 29, inspectors completed their investigation and reinstated the restaurant’s permit after determining that corrective measures had been completed.
Chili’s described the incident as isolated and said it had taken steps to support those affected and prevent further injuries.
The health district emphasized the importance of properly labeling and storing chemicals to prevent accidental contamination.
However, questions remain about how an unlabeled cleaning chemical was allowed near an area where drinks were being prepared.
The bigger question: Could something this dangerous happen at another restaurant, and what safeguards are in place to prevent it?
