MACON COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy has been fired after an internal investigation confirmed he misused a license plate surveillance system designed to help law enforcement investigate crimes.

Former Macon County detective Jonathan Bean was terminated after an outside agency alerted Sheriff Brent Holbrooks’ office to possible misuse of the Flock Safety system on October 16, 2026.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is now examining the matter.

Flock cameras photograph vehicle license plates and allow authorized officers to search a database of vehicle sightings.

But here’s what’s concerning: authorities have not publicly explained which searches Bean conducted, why they were improper, or whether anyone’s information was accessed for personal reasons.

The controversy extends beyond Macon County. Other North Carolina officers have faced criminal charges involving alleged misuse of license plate reader systems.

Macon County commissioners had already voted in July to eliminate funding for the county’s Flock cameras amid concerns about privacy and surveillance.

Law enforcement officials argue the technology helps solve crimes and locate missing people. Critics question whether existing safeguards adequately prevent abuse.

The bigger question: Who is monitoring the people authorized to monitor everyone else?
